Forest trees will enter the seedling hardening period when they grow to a certain period. In the prior seedling hardening period, the seedling growth rate will slow down, the lignification degree will improve as well the requirements of water and fertilizer will also reduce until the terminal bud enter dormancy period. This process will be influenced a lot by the environment, especially the change of temperature. When the temperature increases suddenly, the lignification process will slow down. Generally speaking, growth retardant can be used once the seedling reaches to the specified height so as to promote the seedling lignification and prevent the seedling from freeze injury. Although the elongation growth almost stops after using the growth retardant, the thickening growth is still continuing. It can be seen that the growth retardant also has effect on thickening the tree diameter. Plant growth regulators that are commonly used in promoting the seedling lignification only include uniconazole, paclobutrazol, ethephon, chlormequat chloride, mepiquat chloride, daminozide, fosamine-ammonium, chlorflurenol-methy and so on. The growth retardant is usually sprayed on the stem leaf, which will inhibit the elongation growth of stem leaf, thus the increment and metabolism can be retarded and the seedling can accelerate the lignification. However, if the growth retardant is used too much, it will have certain influence on the seedling growth in the second year. For example, the seedling will still keep dormant in the growing season. At this moment, gibberellin and other pesticides can be used so as to solve this problem.

Improve the survival rate

After years of afforestation, some barren mountains that have good site conditions have already fundamentally completed the afforestation. However, as the remaining barren mountains mostly have poor site conditions, it is very difficult for the trees to survive. By spraying the auxins growth regulator on the seedling, the survival rate can be obviously improved, which can be regarded as an effective way in solving the afforestation survival problems under dry site condition.

Some broad-leaved forest is easy to have premature trunk bifurcation phenomenon, which will have bad influence on the utilization of timber. In order to increase the length of trunk, the lateral bud is usually erased artificially so as to reduce the tree branches. If the fosamine ammonium or paraquat is sprayed on the tree, lateral bud can be killed. Besides, it has high efficacy and will cause little bacterial infection.

Change the seedling transient time from vegetative growth to reproductive growth

Plant growth regulator can change the transient time from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, for example, by using gibberellin in the period when the pine trees transit from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, the transient time can be greatly shortened, thus the seed production stand can improve fructification. This technology has been used in foreign seed orchard.

Construct artificial multiple-layered-forest and maintain the biological diversity

Trees that grow in different levels should avoid the damage caused by the completive plants, therefore, the growth retardant or herbicide can be used so as to effectively control the mutual competent in different levels and the same level. Some multiple-layered-forest is difficult to form under natural conditions as the completive plants are too many for them to survive. Growth retardant or herbicide has provided a new way in solving this problem.
